September 28, 2012

SU-ADVANCE hosted this half-day workshop, "Conversations on Equity and Excellence," at the Syracuse University Hotel and Conference Center.

Dr. Diana Bilimoria, KeyBank Professor and Professor of Organizational Behavior at Case Western Reserve University began the morning with her presentation, "Gender Equity in Science and Engineering: Promising Practices from the ADVANCE Community," during which she presented findings from a comprehensive review of ADVANCE-supported equity initiatives at nineteen U.S. Universities. Dr. Bilimoria was introduced by Shobha Bhatia, ADVANCE Co-PI and Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The morning continued with Karin Ruhlandt, ADVANCE Co-PI and Distinguished Professor & Chair of Chemistry, introducing our workshop leader, Paula Trief, who is currently the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development at SUNY Upstate Medical University. During her workshop, "Being an Effective Mentor: Reflections and Challenges,” Dr. Tried guided participants through a reflection on the qualities that define positive and effective mentorship experiences and relationships.
